The impact of clothing

 Pink Out in Congress

By Kierren (Kamley) Branch

The Pink-Out going on in Congress is presented by mostly Democratic women using their clothing choices to protest President Trump’s policies. These policies have a negative impact on women’s rights.  The women participating in the Pink-Out are getting noticed by press, revealing that clothing colors and choices can be a powerful statement in our governmentdemonstrating how this Pink-Out and other visual symbols can make a big impact. The Pink-Out happening in Congress reveals the influences of political debates and public awareness, and in this case the public awareness of reproductive rights.

You may be wondering, where did the whole Pink-Out movement begin? According to reuters.com’s article, “Abortion foes largely lose $2.4 mln appeal over Planned Parenthood videos”, this protest of reproductive rights had started when an anti-abortionist group had made false claims on Planned Parenthood, an US-based nonprofit organization that provides reproductive and sexual healthcare, including abortion, birth control, and sex education, in 2015these claims were introduced by videos released by The Center for Medical Progress that showed Planned Parenthood employees offering to illegally sell fetal tissue. Later, we find out that the same organization had engaged in the illegal activity of creating a fake company and fake identities to gain access to Planned Parenthood conferences and secretly film employees. Eventually in 2022 the jury of the case had told the organization they had to pay a 2 million verdict to Planned Parenthood, as the accusations had been proved false; none of the state's Planned Parenthood sites had been selling tissue or body parts, according to oversightdemocrats.house.gov’s “Planned Parenthood fact vs. Fiction”. This is a clear example of how far anti-abortionists can go to push back reproductive rights for woman, either not realizing or not caring about how many lives they could’ve impact if these false accusations had been proven true when they weren’t. These false claims had led to Congress trying to block the federal government funding for Planned Parenthood clinics, but according to plannedparenthoodaction.org, the American people fought back by participating in ‘Pink-Out Day’, which is a national day of action where people wear pink, share messages online, and participate in rallies to show their support for access to reproductive healthcare.

Now that we know the background of where the Pink-Out movement originally began, we can head into what the Pink-Out in congress is, why it’s important for our country's availability for reproductive rights, and the impact of the protest. According to nypost.com’s article, “Why female Dem lawmakers are wearing pink to Trump’s address to Congress” The Pink-Out occurred during President Trump’s first address to Congressduring his second term on March 4, 2025, where women in Congress had dressed in different shades of the bold color, pink. The main group of people who had participated in the Pink-Out are part of the Democratic Women’s Caucus, which consists of all the Democratic women in the House of Representatives.Although the protest included mainly Democratic woman, some Republican woman also participated in the protest. The goal of the Pink-Out protest was to draw attention to policies that were negative to women's rights and reproductive health. According to politico.com's article, “Trump admin cuts tens of millions from Planned Parenthood” and self.com’s article, “3 Major Ways Project 2025 Could Impact Your Reproductive Health", examples of these policies would be the funding cuts to reproductive health servicesTrumps administration had sent a letter to planned parenthood, threating to cut their funding because they “overtly encourage illegal aliens to receive care.”Leading into the other example of a policy in place that is being protested with the Pink-Out would be the carrying-out of Project 2025. Project 2025 would have a huge impact on reproductive rights/health, because it threatens to take away medicated abortions (which consist of 2/3’s of all abortions) and put in place the Hyde and Weldon Amendments, which are amendments that limit access to abortion care in the United States, by restricting the use of federal funds for abortion treatments. These policies were seen to limit women's reproductives rights by protesters, leading to the Pink-Out to spread awareness. The Pink-Out had a huge impact on social media, bringing more awareness to the issues regarding the policies that have a negative impact on women, and their rights in general, not just reproductive rights. It served as a visual representation of how you can peacefully protest against harmful issues.

In conclusion, the Pink-Out movement, in Congress and nationwide, has become a powerful symbol against policies that threaten women's rights, especially reproductive rights. Even from the beginning, which was the response to false accusations against Planned Parenthood, the Pink-Out protest has shown how visual protest can spark meaningful dialogue and raise awareness on sensitive subjects. The actions everyone in Congress who has decided to wear pink during Trumps speech, particularly the Democratic Women’s Caucus, made it clear that certain clothing choices can be an impactful statement, rather than just a fashion statement. Through social media, press coverage, and public support, the movement has gained more and more voices that demand justice and equality in reproductive healthcare. Overall, the Pink-Out is a national protest, not just a protest in Congress, and the protest has changed the views of a lot of people.
